History Of 'Shi Niu Dong' 石牛洞 Temple

Present Period

Setting up stage

‘Shi Niu Dong’ (石牛洞) is a Taoist 救世 temple which has its main deity 张公圣君. Its brief history is divided into 2 stages which will be referred to in this page for easy reference as the present and earlier period, both of which are linked but are different from one another.

Nov 1994 marks the begin of 石牛洞 in the present period. With the blessing of 张公圣君, the medium for 张公圣君 decided to set up the new 石牛洞 with 3 new statues of 法主公三公三圣君, 张公圣君 (black face), 萧公圣君 (green face), and 洪公圣君 (red face). The medium (Francis Yeo) performed the necessary rite to get permission to use the name 石牛洞 as the name was once used by a temple that no longer exist and was granted.

Temple Location

The temple went through an initial tough period of locating a roof for our deities and since the begin of 石牛洞, the temple has relocated five times (Bedok Reservior, Onan Road, Rangoon Road, Potong Pasir, Sommerview) and has been in its current location at Geyland for the past 5 years and is in search of the most suitable and permanent roof as requested by 张公圣君 which is also a wish of the temple committees.
A temple building group headed by the deputy chairman has thus been setup.

Medium & Deities

As the temple progress, the number of deities grows. The temple believe that its all fate that bring all the deities under one roof. Deities statues were bequeathed to 石牛洞 from either others temples, donated by devotee or bought by the temple.

Significant statues of the temples include 北级法主 (3/3/2002) which was donated by devotee and
the 5 ‘Dragon King’ (3/3/2004) which the temple has bought. Please refer to the main page link for the list of deities (Under Construction).

Along this present period, eleven deities have descended upon our temple and were represented by our medium.
During the temple weekly consultancy and services,
张公圣君, 北级法洪公圣君, 观世音菩萨 and 玄天上帝 would descend upon our temple. Four our deities would descend as well normally during their 诞辰.

Registration

The temple officially registered itself as a temple with the authority on 2002 and has also joint the Taoist association as one of its member. Within the same period a committee was also set up to look after the daily affair/running of the temple according to the requirement of the constitution.

Mission

At the request of our deity 张公圣君 for our temple member to look for a permanent place of worship so as to do away with the frequent disruption of temple/deities operation/activities caused by the many relocation of the temple premises. The temple committee has since embarked on several programmes to raise fund for the building of a permanent temple on a land.  This effort is still an ongoing project for the committee.

石牛洞 was set up to be and still is a 救世 temple and although it's history is not long, our deities have helped countless devotees. The temple deities intend to continue on this path. The temple members, together with devotees, are actively looking out for a permanent place to make this possible for our deities.

Earlier Period

For this earlier period, the temple got its name ‘Shi Niu Dong’ (石牛洞) from temple medium in Johor.

Temple Location

The temple was initially housed in a zinc shed at Paya Lebar and was there for 2 years before moving to Seletar. It then shift to Chuan Hoe Ave in 1987 and had remained there till the end of the earlier stage which is in Oct 1994.

Medium & Deities

During the early years, although the temple had 3 mediums representing some of its deities, it was only in 农历二月十, 1987 that they had a medium which represent its main deity 张公圣君.

A significant event for the present period took place in Feb 1994, where 张公圣君  requested for 3 new statues for 张公圣君 even though at that time the temple already have the three deities statue. The new statues were ordered and shipped from China, carved based on the description given by 张公圣君‘. The newly carved statues reach Singapore on the 农历七月二十二 1994 and the ritual was done on the 农历七月二十三 1994 which was also 张公圣君千秋.

Final Stage

On the Oct of 1994, the temple was disbanded and all the deities’ statues were returned back to their donor. As the temple no longer exist anymore, the name of the temple was also return back to heaven by the medium from the Johore temple whom gave the temple its name, this mark the end of the earlier stage period and the start of the present period.
